Jorge Amado

Jorge Amado was born in a town named Itabuna, in Bahia on August 10, 1912. His father was from the state of Sergipe and his mother had been born in Bahia of indigenous descent. He is the most divulged Brazilian writer throughout the world and who has been translated in more than 40 languages.

In 1945, Amado was elected federal deputy by the Communist Party and published "Vida de Luís Carlos Prestes, o Cavaleiro da Esperança" (Life of Luis Carlos Prestes, the Horseman of Hope) an eulogy of this southern communist leader. He died at the age of 88 years old on August 6, 2001.

Jorge Amado’s works convey the essence and colour of Bahia, with a profound knowledge of the Brazilian soul. Besides "Tieta do Agreste", he has created a number of powerful female characters such as Gabriela and Dona Flor, the adaptations of which brought Sonia Braga her first success. The list of Jorge Amado's books adapted for the cinema, TV and theatre is long, including "Tenda dos Milagres", "Jubiaba", "Dona Flor e Seus Dois Maridos" and "Gabriela".
