CERTIFICATE EXAMINATION |
Portuguese for Beginners
This 100 hour course forms the first stage of a three-level programme which continues
with Intermediate Portuguese and Advanced Portuguese. It is aimed at complete
or near beginners who wish to acquire basic communicative competence in everyday
Portuguese.
During sessions students learn how to ask about and give personal information, make, accept and decline invitations, order meals, buy goods in shops, ask for and give directions, talk about plans and future actions, etc. Classroom activities include pair or small group work so that everyone has a chance to participate. A continuous assessment grade based on classwork, homework and progress tests will be given to the students at the end of the first term (50 hours).
Students attending the second part of the course are required to take a written test and an oral test at the end of the term. A transition course will be offered in June to students who successfully complete the first year and wish to go on to the Intermediate Portuguese course.
Intermediate Portuguese
The course is designed for students who successfully complete the Portuguese
for Beginners and the Transition I courses. Students who have knowledge of basic
Portuguese and can use the language in familiar situations will be considered
for admission by means of interview.
The purpose of the course is to further develop students communication skills at everyday level. During sessions students will learn how to talk and ask about past events, ask for and give advice, express opinions, etc.
A continuous assessment grade will be given to students at the end of the first term. Students attending the second part of the course are required to take a written test and an oral test at the end of the term. Successful examinees will be issued a Statement of Attendance and Proficiency.
A transition course will be offered in June to students who successfully complete the second year and wish to go on to the Advanced Portuguese course.
After completion of this level students are recommended to travel to Portugal or Brazil to attend an immersion course at a Portuguese language university or other recognized institution.
Advanced Portuguese
The course is designed for students who successfully complete the Intermediate
Portuguese and the Transition II courses. Applicants who attain a similar level
elsewhere may also be admitted.
The aim of this course is to expand students’ communicative competence in Portuguese beyond everyday level. To achieve this goal extracts from television and radio programmes as well as short articles from newspapers will be used as a basis for discussion of current matters related to Portuguese-speaking countries.
At the end of the course, eligible students who wish to do so can take the Certificate Examination leading to the Language Centre Certificate in Portuguese.
