Studying Portuguese Abroad

While there are many study opportunities in a wide range of institutions and countries, this section will concentrate on courses available in the two principal nations where Portuguese is the native language.

Study in Portugal

The Camões Institute, (Instituto Camões), grants scholarships to foreign students to attend Portuguese Language summer courses and annual courses in Portuguese universities - HKU students are eligible!

The Camões Intitute, Portugal's national language and culture organization, through its Asian arm the Portuguese Institute of the Orient (IPOR), is the major provider of Portuguese Language and Culture courses in Asia, namely in PRC, South Korea, Japan, Thailand, Malaysia, India, Philippines, Indonesia and Vietnam.

To apply for a scholarship to study in Portugal students must first chose a course and enroll with the university or institution where they wish to study. Once they have been accepted for a course, they should then contact the Portuguese Language Centre at IPOR (Macau) or the Portuguese Section at HKU to obtain an application form for the scholarship.

The scholarship award for the Summer courses is 500 Euros (approx. 3400 HK$) paid at the beginning of the course, out of which 150 Euros should be paid as fees to the university course provider.

The annual scholarships have a duration of 8 months and are non-renewable. The award is paid monthly at the rate of 500 Euros (approx. 3,400 HK$).

The Camões Institute does not provide accommodation nor sickness or accident insurance.
